LIFE CYCLE OF DI WATER PIPELINE

Every living/nonliving thing has a life cycle. Life cycle is a very important thing in construction work because all construction works start with a huge investment. So constructed structure must provide  service for a certain period of time. The service life of structure widely depends on it's construction method, quality of work, actions on it during service life, environmental effects, changes done during it's service life, regular maintenance (not major repair). To know about the life cycle of water pipeline first I want say something about the construction material of pipeline. As we discussing about the life cycle of DI (Ductile Iron) pipeline so here I will write about Ductile Iron.

Ductile iron also known as ductile cast iron as it is advanced form of cast iron. Ductile iron retains not only all cast iron qualities but also provides more strength,toughness and ductility. The chemical composition of ductile iron is carbon, silicon, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, copper, iron. Ductile iron is flexible and can be bent without breaking. So as a pipeline construction material ductile iron can provide good service life. But the life cycle of pipeline not only depend on the type of pipe is used but also on how it is constructed.

The another important thing to have a good service life of pipeline is to maintain quality of joint. In case of ductile iron pipeline there are several types of joint. So before starting the construction work it is necessary to arrange training for the workers. This is the first step to prevent leakage of pipeline.

Next, during the construction work it is necessary to keep clean inside the pipeline. Never left any sand bag, wastage of food, cigarette filter inside the pipe, because when water flow inside the pipe these things will create obstruction, odor. So daily cleaning is important during construction work.

Another important thing is regular maintenance of pipeline such as valve chamber cleaning, inlet and outlet point water. checking during the natural disaster and repair if any damaged done by it, maintain the flow pressure as per specification because too much pressure will effect the joint which will result in leakage, following the operation rules exactly as directed by the constructor.

By ensuring these things I think DI pipeline for water supply will provide a same design service life and functional service life. And also the life cycle will be prevented from bad influence.
