PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Pipeline construction in a wide range of construction work. As it includes a large area the work management is very important. To construct a pipeline we can divide the whole work in several parts which are route selection survey work, pipeline survey work, trial pit work, pipe laying work, after construction work. Route Selection Survey Work:  This is the primary work for pipeline construction. First we have to perform a preliminary survey through which area we need to construct the pipeline i.e. the area in which there are no water supply connection or the area which are only depended on under ground water. Pipeline Survey Work: After selecting the route we need to make the alignment for pipeline construction  By this survey work we will be able to know that how much land we need to excavate. For this work we can use survey instruments such as Total station, Leveling instrument etc. Trial Pit Work: The main purpose of this work is to check existing utilities, culve...

LIFE CYCLE OF DI WATER PIPELINE

Every living/nonliving thing has a life cycle. Life cycle is a very important thing in construction work because all construction works start with a huge investment. So constructed structure must provide  service for a certain period of time. The service life of structure widely depends on it's construction method, quality of work, actions on it during service life, environmental effects, changes done during it's service life, regular maintenance (not major repair). To know about the life cycle of water pipeline first I want say something about the construction material of pipeline. As we discussing about the life cycle of DI (Ductile Iron) pipeline so here I will write about Ductile Iron. Ductile iron also known as ductile cast iron as it is advanced form of cast iron. Ductile iron retains not only all cast iron qualities but also provides more strength, toughness and ductility. The chemical composition of ductile iron is carbon, silicon, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus,...

LIFE OF A CIVIL ENGINEER !!!!!!!

The word "CIVIL" is related to the  ordinary citizens and their concerns. It is very true that civil engineers are always busy with working for other's benefit. You can not imagine any change without civil engineers. Though it is very rude to hear but it is true that all other engineering comes after civil engineering because civil engineering is related to the one of the basic needs of human being. If you can not live well you can not think about other technologies and to love well you will need civil engineer's help. So civil engineers are serving for the greater goods of human. Here is some greatest quotes by some famous persons about civil engineering; Go for civil engineering, because civil engineering is the branch of engineering which teaches you the most about managing people. Managing people is a skill which is very, very useful and applies almost regardless of what you do. – Sir John Harvey Jones           His father loved him dearly, bu...

FORMULAS

Frequently used formulas in pipeline construction; 1. h = f(LV 2 /2Dg) h : Head loss (m) L : Length of pipeline (m) D: Diameter of pipe (m) (Normally nominal diameter presented in meter is used.) V: Flow velocity (m/s) g : Acceleration of gravity (= 9.8 m/s2) f : Head loss coefficient 2. For water pipeline, Hazen-Williams formula is commonly used. V = 0.35464C H D 0.63 I 0.54 Q = 0.27853C H D 2.63 I 0.54 I = 10.666 C H -1.85 D -4.87 Q 1.85  Where, CH : Coefficient For cement mortar or epoxy lined ductile iron pipe, a CH value of 150 can be used; however for design purpose, 130 is recommended, which includes losses in fittings, valves and other facilities, plus some allowance. I : Hydraulic gradient (unit head loss of the pipeline) = h/L Q : Flow volume (m3/s)

SAFETY FIRST

Safety First: Essential Safety Practices in Water Pipeline Construction (Ductile Iron Pipe) “Safety First” is not just a slogan—it is a fundamental principle that must guide all construction activities. Given the diverse nature of construction work, safety measures vary depending on the type of activity. However, certain core principles—such as worker safety and public (third-party) safety—remain universally applicable. This document outlines key safety practices specifically relevant to water pipeline construction, particularly for Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) installations. 1. Site Safety and Access Control Prior to the commencement of any construction activity, the work zone must be clearly demarcated using safety barriers, cones, and caution tapes. The Site Manager must verify that all protective measures are properly installed before authorizing work to begin. Unauthorized personnel and third parties must be strictly prohibited from entering the designated work area. 2. Worker Sa...
